How Does A Credit Repair Attorney Help Repair Your Credit

Repairing credit is often the first step in trying to finance a car or a house.  Many lenders will not offer credit to someone who already has an existing, adverse, credit history.  For many people repairing credit is simply a manner of paying off a few debts and contacting credit reporting agencies to clear up mistakes and inaccuracies.

However, in some cases an actually credit repair attorney might be your best choice.

Why an Attorney

The first thing people have asked me when I recommended consulting a credit repair attorney has been why go to an attorney when you can take care of the situation yourself?  In my own, personal, experience there are times when the creditor in question is not being responsive and contacting the credit reporting agencies is too time consuming.

Also, when doing things yourself, you are limited by your own immediate knowledge.

An attorney that specializes in credit repair is going to be up to date on the most recent laws regarding credit and fair credit reporting.  They are going to have experience dealing with a variety of credit repair situations ranging from very bad credit to pretty good credit and will be able to pick the best course of action for your unique situation.

Also they are going to have a staff available to assist them in fixing your credit report where you, as an individual, are going to be limited to what you can do on your own.

What Does the Attorney Do?

In the case of my husband the credit attorney became the buffer between him and his creditors.  The attorney was authorized to speak to the creditors on my husbands’ behalf and present them with the evidence that the debt had been paid or was incorrect.  In some cases the attorney wanted additional proof that the debt was a valid one.

If verbal communication didn’t result in immediate actions the attorney then began to drown the creditor in paper work.  This meant sending certified letters requesting details on every aspect of the account while sending copies to the credit reporting agencies.  All in an attempt to convince the creditor that it was in their best interest to resolve the matter either by offering a settlement of some kind or by closing the account all together.

These are not all of the methods the credit attorney used but they were the most affective and things that we would not have been able to manage on our own.  The fees involved were extremely reasonable especially since they resulted in saving us thousands of dollars that would have otherwise been paid to the various creditors.

If you are interested in using a credit repair attorney you can contact them the same way you would contact any attorney.  Look through your local yellow pages or newspaper advertisements for attorneys and see what services they offer.
