In most cases the victims of this theft I are not aware that their identity was stolen until well after the damage has been done. Now that free instant credit reports are available it is more important to take advantage of them to keep yourself from having to deal with rebuilding your credit. If you have already used your free report then contact your credit card company. Many now offer at least one free credit report to consumers but it is up to you to ask. In some cases the credit card company, or for some people their bank, will offer a free credit report in return for signing up for a credit monitoring service of some kind. These services will watch out for any suspicious activity and send you an email notification about it. Suspicious activity includes, but is not limited to, new accounts being opened, multiple inquiries being made, etc. These service trials are usually about one month long. During that entire month you have unlimited access to your credit report and often they will help with any disputes you would like to make in that time frame. When the monitoring services help with disputes they contact the credit reporting agencies on your behalf along with the creditors to clear up any problems you might be having. Before the end of the trial you can cancel the service and keep your credit report for free. Now there are also some companies that will let you access your free instant credit reports online after you have been denied credit. For the longest time you could only get your credit report through the mail if you were denied but more and more companies are trying keep up with the times. After denying your credit request some companies will let you instantly see your credit score and report in addition to mailing you the traditional denial letter. |
